Cathy and Family
Our deepest condolence of the passing of Ron.
Ron was the super star of community involvement.
My favorite memory was when you and Ron came out
to SNAFU Lake to visit us all while camping one summer weekend.
Ron spent the whole day setting up his Ham Radio while we all went
fishing. Once evening came Ron entertained us with calls around the
world to his ham operator friends. Then radio, equipment and antenna
were all packed up and off to Whitehorse, as Ron was not about to
sleep in the woods!
Loving memories of good times in the Yukon

Ron was an icon of broadcast journalism in the Yukon and was a pioneer of early commercial radio in Whitehorse with the launch of CKRW in the late 1960s. I best remember him as master of ceremonies for the annual Old Time Fiddle competition that was broadcast over the Yukon air waves in the 1980s. You could call him "Voice of the Yukon". A fantastic broadcaster and great human being. Rest in peace Ron.

Cathy, Suzzanne and family. Ron holds a special place in so many hearts. I recall moving to Mayo back in the late 80's, feeling a bit overwhelmed. A call came on from Ron at CBC who wanted to talk about opportunities to get active in our little community. He was a leg-up for so many - each of us feeling like what we were doing mattered. He continued that spirit looking you right in the eye wanting to hear it all. He's the stuff legends are made off.

Dear Cathy, Suzanne and family,
We are sending love and thanks for having Rob be part of our lives. He was an amazing man and a legend.
I raced x-c skiing in the 80's and 90's during the time that Ron worked at CBC. He was true supporter of sports and his commitment to having local athletes' voices heard made me the envy of many of my teammates around Canada. There were many times when I had barely crossed the finish line and Ron would be placing calls to track me down in hotel lobbies around Europe. Our most memorable call was me being able to phone him right after my first Olympic race in 1992 and I was able to tell the Yukon how proud I was to represent them while also representing Canada.
He did everything with passion and enthusiasm and we were all lucky because of it. He was missed by the sports community when he left CBC and he will be deeply missed by all of us now.
With love and thanks for having him a part of our lives, Lucy Steele-Masson

Sincere condolences Cathy and family.
Thank you for sharing Ron!
Growing up in Whitehorse I always admired how he would get his story from the field.
Little did I know our paths would cross professionally as he supported our endeavours as the Yukon Zone of the Canadian Ski Patrol System and then later as a valued resource and member of the Yukon Amateur Radio Association (YARA) who assisted Yukon EMO during the epic 2007 fire and flood season.
My favorite memory - I was working late one night and Ron came into the Emergency Measures Communications Room to check on YARA's radio equipment as he prepared to connect Commander Chris Hadfield, who was on the International Space Station, with a school class later that week. At his urging to break free from work, we sat, considered sipping stale coffee from the Ops Room, and he regaled me with stories as he tweaked and dialed in to HAM operators from around the world. His passion and love of the radio world being witnessed in real time.
Professional. Friendly. Legendary.
Thank you for your valued friendship VIK tah - YANG key - Wun - ROW me oh - mike!

What a memorable guy Ron was! A notable member of the Yukon Sports Hall of Fame, I loved Ron’s innate curiosity and relentless ability to engage with people of all ages. I haven’t seen Ron since he left Whitehorse, but my fondness for and memories of him remain strong. As a sports reporter and broadcaster of running events, Ron covered races before, after AND during them. Just ask Olympian Lucy Steele, the ever engaging Bill Parry or the intense Chester Kelly who were probably interviewed by Ron (not necessarily willingly) as they ran up the relentlessly steep Dome in Dawson City, Yukon!
Ron, I’m so sad to hear that you have left this world, but your spirit burns strong in the memories of so many Yukoners of a certain age — including me.
Cathy, my condolences to you and all your family members and friends who knew Ron.

Many condolences to Ron’s many family and friends. Ron worked at CBC with my Dad, Ray Anderson, in 1981 CBC was on strike and I was getting married, Ron wrote a check to my Dad and said put this towards Judy’s wedding. He had taken a job at Murdochs Gem Shop where I was working to get him through the strike.
Sending much love from my family to yours,
Judy and Laurie Butterworth and Shirley Anderson

Wow! Ron was such an amazing person. He volunteered at Computers for Schools Yukon for a time, taking computers we couldn't reuse apart so the components could be recycled. The help was needed and appreciated, but I loved standing downstairs with him and hearing his stories and perspectives on events. Such an interesting man. He's been deeply missed since they moved away, but even more so now that I know he's left us behind.
My condolences to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear about Ron's passing. Condolences to the family.
Even though I never really knew Ron that well, my connection was primarily through amateur radio and the Kluane Chilkat Bike Relay, plus of course hearing his voice on CKRW, CBC, and finally on the 2 M repeater system. Ron was always a positive person, passionate about Ham Radio, volunteering and making sure peoples voices were heard through his many many years of reporting. Ron of course was involved in so many things it would be hard to name them all, but I believe he was one of the founding members of the Yukon Amateur Radio Association.
They Yukon was lucky to have Ron as their own and is a better place because of his contributions.

Cathy and Family,
So sorry to hear of the passing of Ron.
A kind and gentle soul he taught me lots about journalism, working with, and speaking to the press.
We'd often do a run through before he pressed 'record' and nodded and bobbed his head in encouragement as question after question was posed.
He was such a strong community supporter, especially in the volunteer and recreation community.
Ron, Thank you.
You will certainly be missed.
You will not be forgotten.
...and your Yukon Nuggets are true gems!
With love and appreciation,

Cathy and family. I would like to send my sincere condolences. I was surprised and shocked when I read of Ron's passing. I think back to running with Ron in his first marathon and many races. I will remember, fondly, all those Tuesday night fun runs and the Lazy Persons Triathlons. Keep on running, my friend.

I send heartfelt condolences to Cathy and the rest of the family. Ron was such a rock in the Yukon radio world. In early 1988, he and I both ran in the Yukon leg of the torch relay for the Winter Olympics in Calgary. We each got a terrific uniform to wear during the run and we were able to keep them. For many years after that, each time he would bump into me his first question was, “Can you still fit into your spiffy red suit?!?!”. Ron was one of the good guys.

Cathy, Suzanne and Families. Sherron and I are so saddened by the news of Ron's passing. We met Ron in Whitehorse in 1969 and remained in contact ever since. Ron was a wonderful volunteer for all of Yukon, and it is due to him that the radio communication throughout most of Yukon is in place.Ron and I used to go fishing in Haines Alaska and one evening he said he would take the chainsaw and cut down a dead standing tree for our campfire. None of us knew that he had never fallen a tree and next thing we knew he had traffic stopped into and out of Haines as the tree that he cut down was across the main road... Great Times.
Our sympathy to all.

Dear Cathy and family,
We are so sorry to hear Ron has passed away. He was here in Whitehorse when we arrived in 1970 and was one of the first people we met. We think we met him in Kiwanis. I have very fond memories of him at cbc as my operator when I taped my programs so long ago. But our knowledge of Ron went far beyond that..his contributions to our community are legend and I always will smile when he broadcast “ live and direct” from a swan that kind of lost its way and didn’t go south as it should have! He and I also sat on the Recreation Board and I enjoyed and appreciated his insights into the community then. He was a cheerful and interesting person who was great company as well.
Our sympathies to you, his kids and the rest of the family.

To my sister, Cathy,
There will always be a piece of our hearts that belong to Ron.
Do not hurry as you walk with grief;
It does not help the journey.
Walk slowly;
Pausing often.
Do not hurry as you walk with grief.
Be gentle with the one who walks with grief.
Walk slowly;
Pausing often.
Take time, be gentle.
As you walk with grief.
Forever Susan and John
