Doug Cooper was cool.
When I found out he was a government employee,
I fashioned a career for him as a "secret agent" ... he ran with it.
In the end, it wasn't about him being an agent or a postal delivery guy.
The point is, we'll never know. He spoke in several languages ( the coffee shop girls seemed to know what he was talking about - we didn't).
He knew about foreign politics and foreign aid and everything foreign.
His political commentary was direct and critical and made-up and real and funny as hell - with a wit to match.
He was a family-first guy who travelled miles to be in the company of his children and thought drives to California and jaunts to Cuba were just the way he was supposed to spend his retirement.
He left us at the rink to move to Ottawa to be close to his grandchildren.
He knew why we call them grand.
Now, it's time for rest, Doug.
