Obituary of William Frederick Hann
William Frederick Hann
October 20, 1938 - October 10, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Frederick Hann (85) of Smiths Falls, Ontario.
Bill was born to William Stanfield Hann and Helena Maude Mullins on October 20, 1938. The fourth of seven children, Bill was raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland and joined the RCAF in 1958. On January 4, 1960, at CFB St. Hubert, he married Lorraine Villeneuve. Together, they built a family and lovingly stood beside each other for nearly sixty-five years. In 1970, after time spent in Sherbrooke and Toronto they were transferred, with Bell, to Smiths Falls. It is here that they settled into their family home, raised their children and enjoyed retirement together. Bill was a reliable and dignified man who served others when he saw a need. Bill had a tender heart, a quick wit and a curious mind. He was a hard worker and a provider who loved his family deeply. Working from the Bell Numogate Office and Tower, Bill retired as a Senior Systems Technician in 1998. In his work, as in his life, Bill would go above and beyond to ensure things were done correctly. He and Lorraine enjoyed an active lifestyle and had been members of the Smiths Falls Civitan Club, the Lombard Glen Golf Club and both enjoyed league play at Gratton Bowling Lanes. Bill enjoyed catching fish (or not) at Charleston and Big Rideau lakes. At home, he could be found working on a crossword, chipping golf balls in the backyard or puttering with electronics. He could fix or build anything - to exacting standards. He and Lorraine were avid Ottawa Senators fans and on Friday nights Bill would attend the local arena in support of the Smiths Falls Jr. Bears. It was a great pleasure for Bill and Lorraine to spend time with family and friends.
Bill is survived by his wife Lorraine and their four children: Brent, Jane, John (Katherine) and Wendy (John McKenney), nine grandchildren: Joe (Liza), Ryan, Alyssa, Chelsea, David, Rebecca, Daniel, William and Graydon and three great-grand children: Jake, Zach and Ava. He will be deeply missed by those who knew him as “Dad” or “Poppa” as well as his extended family and many friends in the community.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Walter and sisters Edith and Marion and daughter-in-law Diana Duff. He is survived by his brother David of Newfoundland, sister Daphne (Skip Gunther) of Florida and sister Yvonne Christian of North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations directed to the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank (93 Russell Street E. Smiths Falls, Ontario K7A 1G8). The family will hold a private memorial with interment to follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls.
